Robert Wright argues that the war in Afghanistan is strategically worse for the U.S. than the Vietnam War was. (N.Y. Times)
Turns out that there are no known cases of cellphones causing airplane accidents despite being used—surreptitiously and illegally—on almost every flight. (Boston Globe)
Mount Morris, NY, which is undergoing a renewal on Main Street according to a New York Times article. The article mentions, but doesn’t emphasize, that the village has a built-in tourist attraction, Letchworth State Park, the ‘Grand Canyon of the East.’ That’s something other towns can’t replicate so its renewal effort would be difficult to duplicate elsewhere. That’s too bad because America has a ton of charming small towns that need renewal.
I visited Mt. Morris as a kid and now feel motivated to go back.
Aung San Suu Kyi is expected to be released tomorrow. This is like Mandela being set free. Maybe someday democracy will rise in Myanmar too. (N.Y. Times)
A costume for “Superman Lives,” a movie that cost $50 million in the late 90’s but never was completed. (Collider)
It’s awesome to see the U.S. stand up for the right thing concerning the trials of the men who committed genocide in Cambodia. Too bad it’s taken this long. On the other hand, when I visited Phnom Penh in 2002, I couldn’t bring myself to visit Tuol Sleng prison. It was just too traumatic for me. I can relate to the desire to move on (but of course, I’m not a victim of the genocide). (N.Y. Times)
