There’s a good case—on the environmental and economic merits—for increasing the price of street parking like we’ve done here in Chicago. The problem in Chicago is that prices are fixed instead of variable to adjust to local usage patterns. I often see many blocks completely empty of cars. Also, we as a city should NOT have outsourced the job of installing parking meters. It doesn’t take a brain-trust to do so. (N.Y. Times)
